Begusarai: Begusarai (Hindi बेगूसराय ) is a city and a municipal council in Begusarai district in the state of Bihar, India. Begusarai had traditionally been a communist stronghold and it was earlier also referred to as the Leningrad of Bihar.
History: It was established in 1870 as a subdivision of Munger District. In 1972, it was given district status after a strong pressure on the government by Late Rai Saheb Bhubneshwari Sahai.This man had a charismatic personality and was the first person in the district to be awarded the prestigious title of Rai Saheb by the British.It is said that before independence Rai Saheb controlled the whole of politics of Begusarai, without whose permission no leaf would move.The name of the district apparently comes from "Begum" (queen)+ "Sarai" (inn). "Begum" of Bhagalpur used to come to the "Simaria Ghat" (holy place at the Ganges bank) for a month of pilgrimage which later took slang form of Begusarai.
Geographic: Begusarai is located at 25°25′N 86°08′E / 25.42°N 86.13°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 41 metres (134 feet). It has an area of 1879 square km.
The District contains Asia's largest oxbow lake, kabar Taal which contains some of rare and endangered birds and is situated near Manjhaul village.
Climate: As part of the Gangetic plains of the Indian subcontinent, the district experiences three climatic seasons – the summer season from March to mid June, the monsoon season from mid June to October and the winter season from November to February. The month of February & March fall in the transitional season from winter to summer described as spring or “Basant”. Similarly the months of September & October falls in the transitional season from the monsoon season to the winter season also called “Shishir”.
Demographic: The 2001 census count placed the Begusarai population at 23,42,989 as on the first of March. The population has grown at an annual average rate of 2.9%.
Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Begusarai has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. People mainly speak a local variant of Maithili, called Dakshin Maithili (South Maithili, locally called Thethi).
Economy: Begusarai is the Industrial capital of Bihar also known as second capital of bihar. There are many Ancillary Industries here. The three main Industries are Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Barauni Thermal Power Station (BTPS), Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited (HFCL) ""(Closed by Central government of India Bhartiya Janta Party(BJP))"
Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy. 88.33% people depend upon agriculture. Main cash crops of the district are oilseeds, tobacco, jute, potato, red chilies, tomato and andi.
Transport: Begusarai is well connected to other parts of Bihar and India through railways as well as roads. New Delhi - Guwahati railway line passes through Begusarai. Its total length is 95 km. State roads have a total length of 262 km. 95% of the all the villages are linked to the rural and urban road facilities.There are 18 railway stations in this district.
Places to visit: Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary which contains rare and endangered migratory birds and has a large Oxbow lake, Jai Mangla Temple (at Kanwar Lake), Nawlakha temple and Simaria's Ganges Bank (also known as the birth Place of India's National Poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar) are worth visiting, Chhourahi Bakhadda is also one of the best place to visit.

More info: Begusarai situated on the river Ganges in North Bihar was carved out of Munger district in the 1870s. The name Begusarai is derived after a person called “Begu” living here “Sarai”. The vast KaverLake is situated in this district making it a natural habitat for special birds of which currently 59 types that flies from outside India and 107 types of local birds have been identified. It is one of most industrialised of the districts of Bihar containing Indian Oil Refineries of Barauni, and Hindustan Fertilizer Limited, Thermal power station and numerous of smaller units including petrochemicals and leather tanning within the private sectors. The Ghats of the Ganga at Simaria has special religious significance for devotees and tourists.

Begusarai is one of the 38 districts in Bihar. It is part of Munger division. The head quarter of the district is Begusarai. The total population of the district is 2,349,366 and the area is 1,918 sqkm. Wheat, Maize, Chili and Peppe are the main agricultural crops. Fertilizer Factory, Thermal Power Station and Petro-Chemicals are the main industries. Ganga and Kamla are the main rivers. The literacy rate is 47.98%. The female literacy rate is 35.64%. The male literacy rate is 59.13%.
